RAD Leader Dagger – Overview
The RAD Leader Dagger is a highly symbolic and dramatic edged weapon awarded to officers of the German Reich Labor Service during the Third Reich. The dagger, instituted in 1937, was a status symbol denoting the authority and rank of RAD leaders and was different from the hewers awarded to enlisted personnel.
Historical Background
The Reichsarbeitsdienst was a national labor corps established to supply infrastructure service, national service, and ideological indoctrination as a component of the Nazi regime. The RAD was an important element of prewar construction and wartime supply. A specially designed dagger was awarded to RAD officers as a ceremonial side arm, blending military tradition and Nazi symbolism.
Design Features
Blade: Straight, double-edged, finished steel
Inscribed motto: "Arbeit adelt" ("Labor Ennobles")
Usually stamped by makers like Eickhorn, Alcoso, or Carl Julius Krebs
Grip: White celluloid on wood with a gentle curve (Very rare two tone and orange grip have been noted)
Crossguard: Metal crossguard and pommel with RAD spade symbol and swastika Stylized wings or eagle motif with the RAD shovel insignia Intricately detailed cast metal, usually silver-plated
Scabbard Nickel- or silver-plated steel with oak leaf ornament Typically blackened or lacquered body Two suspension rings for hangers
Length: Around 40 cm (15.75 inches)
Officer vs. Enlisted Version:
The RAD Leader Dagger was for senior members and officers. It is sleeker and more ornamental than the heavy RAD hewer (Hauer) enlisted men carried, which featured a cleaver-style blade and heavier construction.
Collectibility and Value:
RAD Leader Daggers are highly sought after by Third Reich militaria collectors because of their elaborate design, low production numbers, and symbolic importance. Condition-, maker-, originality-, and completeness-dependent value (i.e., hangers and portepee present). Following recent market trends: Typical value range: $3000–$4,000+ Excellent specimens (mint state, rare makers, rare grips) $5,000+ and above
