The Tantal was adopted in 1988 and was the Polish military's standard service rifle until it was replaced by more modern variants such as the Beryl. It was made by Arms Factory in Radom.

Variants: WZ. 89 Onyks, a short gas system and barrel version of the carbine for special forces and armored vehicle crews.
Civilian and Collector Market
Brought into the U.S. in the early 2000s, many Tantal parts kits were assembled into semi-automatic rifles. With their unique appearance, cold war heritage, and strange 3-round burst capability (on military models), Tantal have gained popularity among Warsaw Pact weapon collectors.
Key Findings
Frequently inaccurately referred to as an AK-74 copy, though the Tantal includes Polish unique design.
